  • Kyntronics, a leading manufacturer of precision actuation solutions is excited to announce that it has joined the Rockwell Automation Technology Partner program. The program references the integration of the Kyntronics SMART Electro-Hydraulic Actuators (SHA) with Rockwell Automation servo motors, drives and controls.

    Kyntronics and Rockwell Automation collaborated to develop an Add-On-Instruction (AOI) that is simple to integrate into the ControlLogix platform. The AOI features include position & force control, position control with force & speed limiting, compound moves, multiple gain sets, synchronized motion and coordinated motion using Kyntronics' actuators. It is a complete solution that shortens application software development time and simplifies integration for the OEM/Machine Builder.

    “Joining the Rockwell Automation Technology Partner program allows us to offer our mutual customers a superior actuation solution that has seamless integration with the Rockwell Automation controls platform” said Carl Richter, Kyntronics VP-GM. “With the collaboration, Kyntronics added a new Controls option allowing the OEM/Machine Builder to provide their own Rockwell Automation components to connect with Kyntronics' actuators.”

  • As part of the evolution of efficiency for manufacturers, they are faced with resolving performance issues that cause a loss of time and reduce profits. Kyntronics recently worked with a Tier 1 automotive supplier experiencing performance issues and premature failure/short life with their existing Electromechanical – Roller Screw type actuator solution. The repeated load cycle was causing accelerated localized wear of the roller screw. In addition, the variation in friction between damper and driveshaft tube components was causing force spikes and shock loads.

    A traditional  hydraulic cylinder system approach and a larger electro-mechanical actuator were considered to replace the system. However, the hydraulic system occupied too much floor space and did not provide accurate control. The larger electro-mechanical actuators grew in footprint considerably and cost  was prohibitive. The supplier resolved with issues with the Kyntronics Electro-Hydraulic Actuator (SHA), combining the best features of hydraulic power with the precision of servo control used in electro-mechanical actuators while eliminating the shortcomings of those approaches. 

    The result is an actuation solution with up to 170,000 LBs (755kN) of force and superior functionality at a lower price point.   • As packaging manufacturers work on upgraded processes on the plant floor, they work with machine builders to try to find more cost and space effective solutions. The machine builders are often faced with the challenge of eliminating hydraulic solutions to creating smaller footprint, have increased energy efficiency, and provide quieter operations. In addition, removing hydraulics can help make the work environment cleaner with lower maintenance needs.
     
    Equipment designers are constantly on the lookout for innovative ways to improve performance and usability especially when adaptability and quick changeover are uniquely important. After exploring alternative solutions including electro-mechanical actuators (EMA), Sean Dotson, President and founder of RND Automation in Lakewood Ranch FL, discovered Kyntronics' SMART actuator solution for the die cutting stations on their MiniPack rigid packaging Horizontal Form, Fill, and Seal machinery.
     
    Kyntronics worked with RND Automation to incorporate the Kyntronics SMART Hydraulic Actuators (SHA) for their new, nonhydraulic machine blister pack die-cut stations. The SHAs were rated for 12,100 Lbf. (54kN) of force and were provided in an inverted parallel configuration, a design feature unique to the SHA. This configuration allowed the all-in-one SHA to fit the existing machine frame.

  • When manufacturers are faced with building a new production line, they often take the opportunity to review existing technology and set requirements to help build more efficient processes.

    Recently, a heavy truck axle manufacturer, working with a special machine builder, launched a project to procure a horizontal assembly press for a new axle line. The new line needed to achieve improved process quality for the assembly press station as part of a company-wide initiative to improve throughput and reduce rework. The customers’ “minimal hydraulics” mandate created unique challenges for the Machine Builder due to the high forces required in the assembly press stations. 
    The machine builder reviewed Electro-Mechanical Actuator (EMA) technology, but disregarded it as the solution due to cost, space and other concerns including EMA screw life due to the uneven “spike loads” the actuators would be subject to during production.

    After careful consideration, the Machine Builder selected an all-in-one solution, the Kyntronics SMART Hydraulic Actuators (SHA) for the horizontal assembly stations on the new axle line. The SHAs were rated for 45,000 lbf (200kN) of force and were provided in a parallel configuration providing the force required in a compact package that fit the available space envelope.

  • As modern automotive engineering for chassis systems continue to evolve, Tier-1 manufacturers are faced with retooling production processes and hydroforming lines to accommodate the changes in a new model design. These automotive manufacturers are faced with the challenge of supporting existing manufacturing parts while making upgrades to produce new products at higher volumes.

    The hydroforming line had the additional challenge of eliminating a disorganized and inefficient hydraulic system while seamlessly integrating the Rockwell Automation controls and drives. The manufacturer began assessing the Electro-Mechanical Actuators (EMA) technology for the replacement option. Due to the large size and high cost of EMA technology, the solution would not meet their project requirements.

    Working with the Kyntronics’ team, the manufacturer then reviewed the Smart Hydraulic Actuators (SHA) that were rated from 6,000 lbf (27kN) to 23,000 lbf (103kN) of force and were available in both in-line and right-angle configurations to optimally fit the available space envelope. In addition, the SHAs incorporated Rockwell Automation (Allen Bradley) Servo Motors and Drives that met the customers’ control specifications.
