  • Ericsson USA 5G Smart Factory.

    Ericsson’s (NASDAQ: ERIC) USA 5G Smart Factory in Lewisville, Texas, has been recognized by the World Economic Forum as a global front runner in the Fourth Industrial Revolution (4IR). The Forum has awarded the site with its prestigious “*Global Lighthouse” designation in recognition of Ericsson’s deployment of next-generation technology at the site and its subsequent impact – including an impressive 2.2 times improved output per employee when compared to a similar site without the automation and 4IR improvements.

    The site is the first Ericsson factory to receive this recognition by the Forum for adoption of 4IR technologies at scale with demonstrated benefits to date. Since commencing operations in early 2020, the USA 5G Smart Factory team has developed 25 different use cases, to be deployed at scale in less than 12 months.

    When compared to a similar site without its automation and 4IR improvements, the 5G automated factory with connected robots has delivered 120 percent improved output per employee and 65 percent reduction in manual material handling.

    Integrated environmental systems have been designed to reduce energy consumption by 24 percent, indoor water usage by 75 percent when compared to a similar building and the factory is powered by 100 percent renewable electricity. Ericsson is also pursuing **LEED Gold and LEED Zero Carbon certifications for the smart factory, which will make it the first Ericsson factory globally to achieve this distinction.

    Ericsson has invested in the next generation of supply chains to create a customized, sustainable, and end-to-end connected supply chain across the globe. In the US, Ericsson has invested more than USD 100million in its first 5G Smart Factory. The factory primarily serves Ericsson 5G customers in North America.

    Ericsson is also fast-tracking next-generation smart manufacturing through a modular and flexible production setup in its factories in Estonia, China, and Brazil. This will ensure close working with customers through Ericsson’s European, Asian and American operations.

    Ericsson supports the 1.5 C° ambition set up by the Paris Agreement. To achieve this, the world needs to halve global emissions by 2030 and reach net-zero emissions before 2050. Digital technologies such as 5G and IoT deployed across a range of industries, such as manufacturing, can help reduce global carbon emissions by up to 15 percent by 2030.

  • Ericsson has partnered with Three Ireland and Glanbia, a global leader in agriculture and nutrition, to launch Ireland’s first indoor 5G campus network in a live manufacturing environment.

    Ericsson launch indoor 5G network to boost manufacturing

    The indoor 5G network, inside the multi-purpose dairy processing plant at Glanbia Ireland’s facility in Ballyragget, County Kilkenny, will bring enhanced indoor 5G coverage, low latency connectivity and improved data security across Glanbia’s largest Irish plant.

    The 5G solution will enable faster and more accurate maintenance tasks and provide for richer analysis of plant processes, helping to reduce manual administration and boost manufacturing efficiency.

    5G radio coverage will be provided by the industry-leading Ericsson Radio Dot System and combined with Three Ireland’s 5G spectrum, Glanbia will trial bespoke 5G use cases, including Augmented Reality (AR) and Virtual Reality (VR) applications, and test how 5G can provide enhanced indoor connectivity for their wider production facilities.

    Ericsson and Three Ireland launched 5G together in 2020. This next stage in their strong partnership will demonstrate how 5G can be utilized in Irish manufacturing to develop further enterprise use cases, which in time can be applied across a range of sectors. Both companies are already working together to develop next-generation 5G consumer use cases through the global Ericsson Startup 5G program.

  • Driving the future of the automotive industry: A research partnership between Ericsson and Porsche is leveraging the power of 5G to accelerate production capabilities at Porsche’s manufacturing production complex in Leipzig, Germany.

    Ericsson and Porsche rev up for 5G future

    The trial project is the first deployment of a private 5G network at any of Porsche’s production complexes, heralding in a new remote production era for the high-performance car manufacturer.

    Ericsson’s secure 5G standalone (SA) network operates over a private frequency spectrum, providing high-speed wireless connectivity, ultra-low latency and huge data-handling capabilities.

    “As we transition to the factory of tomorrow, Porsche production is undergoing a comprehensive digital transformation. In the process, we are guided by our vision: smart, lean and green. 5G technology is one of the key elements laying the groundwork for our Smart Factory”, says Albrecht Reimold, Member of the Executive Board for Production and Logistics at Porsche AG.

    The dedicated 5G network will be piloted in the technology cell of Porsche’s Macan body shop and will enable the control of robotics in real time without cables. It also allows for the transmission of massive amounts of data between other on-site machines, production workers and vehicles through the secure, flexible and predictable transmission of signals in real time. 

    Gerd Rupp, Chairman of the Executive Board, Porsche Leipzig, says: “The 5G test area offers an excellent opportunity to test use cases in a production context and is an important step forward in our production of the future.”
